Frequently Asked Questions
How many years do I need to live in Sweden before applying for citizenship?
From 1 June 2026, most applicants need 8 years of continuous residence (raised from 5). Exceptions: Nordic citizens need 2 years, refugees and those with subsidiary protection need 4 years, and EU/EEA citizens need 5 years.
Do I need to pass a language test for Swedish citizenship?
Yes, from January 2027 a Swedish language test at A2 level will be required. If you're applying before that date, no language test is needed. SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) is a free government programme that can get you to A2.
Does leaving Sweden affect my citizenship clock?
Any single absence of more than 6 months can reset your residency clock. Shorter absences reduce your qualifying time proportionally. Total absences across all trips are deducted from your qualifying period.
Do I need permanent residency before applying for citizenship?
Yes. You must hold a permanent residency permit (PUT — uppehållstillstånd) before you can apply for citizenship. Apply for PUT as soon as you meet the residency requirement for it — it adds processing time before your citizenship application.
How long does Swedish citizenship processing take?
Typically 6–12 months from the date of a complete application submission. Migrationsverket does not publish a fixed target for citizenship decisions.
