Two fast routes: EU Blue Card and highly qualified employer track
There is no single 'fast-track visa' for tech workers in Sweden. Instead, two existing routes produce a 30-day decision rather than the standard four months.
The first is the EU Blue Card (EU-blakort). When an employer applies for a highly qualified worker who meets the Blue Card criteria โ salary of at least SEK 52,000 a month, relevant university qualification or five years of professional experience, and a job contract of at least six months โ Migrationsverket aims to decide the application within 30 days of receiving a complete file.
The second is the standard employer-sponsored work permit route for highly qualified occupations. Employers who regularly hire from outside the EU and register as highly qualified employers also trigger the 30-day processing target for complete applications.
The start-up exemption: no standard salary floor for small tech companies
From 1 June 2026, companies in the tech or life science sector that are fewer than five years old and have fewer than 100 employees are exempt from the standard salary requirement for work permits. This is the single most significant benefit for early-stage Swedish companies competing for international talent.
Even under the exemption, the salary must be at least 75% of Sweden's median salary. That floor is SEK 28,725 a month (75% of SEK 38,300 as of 16 June 2026, SCB). The salary still must match collective agreement levels or industry norms for the role.
ICT permits: for multinationals moving staff to Sweden
If you work for a company based outside the EU and your employer is transferring you to a Swedish office, you may apply for an ICT permit (intra-company transfer) rather than a standard work permit. ICT permits cover managers, specialists, and trainee employees. From 1 June 2026, the salary for ICT permit holders must match collective agreement minimums or industry norms.
The maximum duration for an ICT specialist or manager permit is three years; trainee permits last up to one year. Processing for complete, highly qualified ICT applications targets the same 30 days as the Blue Card route.
What "complete application" actually means
The 30-day target only applies when the application is complete on arrival. Migrationsverket defines complete as: a signed employment contract, evidence of salary matching the threshold, proof of qualifications (for Blue Cards), evidence of health insurance if the stay is one year or less, and correct payment of the application fee.
Missing documents reset the clock. From 1 June 2026, health insurance is a new mandatory document for stays up to one year. Applications submitted without it are not considered complete and will not start the 30-day counter.
How to check if your application is progressing
Migrationsverket publishes waiting-time statistics for all permit categories on its website. If a complete application has been waiting more than 30 days without a decision, check the case status via 'My page' on migrationsverket.se. The agency does not accept progress enquiries by phone or email โ the online tracker is the only channel.

Actionable Tip: Always verify that your employer is certified with the Migration Agency before applying. Certified employers can process permits in under 30 days, while non-certified applications can take 6 to 12 months.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Swedish work permit take for tech workers?
For highly qualified roles (EU Blue Card or highly qualified employer track), Migrationsverket targets a decision within 30 days of receiving a complete application. Standard work permits take up to four months.
Can a Swedish start-up hire foreign tech talent without meeting the salary threshold?
Yes. Tech and life science companies fewer than five years old with fewer than 100 employees are exempt from the standard salary floor. The salary must still be at least 75% of Sweden's median โ SEK 28,725 a month as of June 2026 (SCB) โ and match industry norms.
What is the ICT permit in Sweden?
An ICT permit (intra-company transfer) allows employees of non-EU multinationals to work in a Swedish branch. It covers managers, specialists, and trainees. The salary must match collective agreement levels, and from June 2026 it must also meet the same minimum floors as standard permits.
What documents are required for a fast-track work permit?
A complete application requires: a signed employment contract, salary evidence meeting the required threshold, proof of qualifications (for EU Blue Cards), health insurance evidence for stays of one year or less, and the correct application fee. Missing any one of these prevents the 30-day clock from starting.
Does Sweden have a dedicated tech visa or talent visa?
No. Sweden does not have a separate tech visa. The EU Blue Card and the highly qualified employer work permit track serve the same function, both targeting 30-day decisions for complete applications.
