Frequently Asked Questions (vanliga frågor)

Do I have to pay import duty and VAT when importing a car from an EU country to Sweden?

No customs duty applies to cars imported from another EU member state. VAT (*moms* 25%) is only charged if the car is considered new (driven under 6,000 km or owned for less than 6 months).

What is origin verification (*ursprungskontroll*)?

*Ursprungskontroll* is a mandatory legal verification conducted by Transportstyrelsen (fee SEK 1,240) to check that the vehicle is legally acquired, not stolen, and registered properly in the origin country before inspection.

Can I bring my car tax-free as moving goods (*flyttsak*) when relocating to Sweden?

Yes. If you relocate from a non-EU country and have owned and driven the car for at least 6 months outside the EU, you can apply for Tullverket customs duty and VAT exemption as moving goods (*flyttsak*).
