If you apply for an apartment rental contract, a mobile subscription, or a mortgage in Sweden, you will trigger a credit check (kreditupplysning). The vast majority of Swedish financial institutions rely on the country's dominant credit reporting agency (kreditupplysningsföretag), Upplysningscentralen (UC).
Unlike credit systems in the US or UK, Sweden does not assign you a three-digit "credit score". Instead, UC uses a risk forecast (riskprognos) to calculate your probability of default, which is then translated into one of five risk classes (riskklass).
The 5 UC Risk Classes
Lenders use the UC risk class system to determine whether to approve your loan and what interest rate to offer you. The classes are structured as follows:
| Risk Class | Risk Forecast (%) | Creditworthiness Status |
|---|---|---|
| Riskklass 5 | 0.1% - 0.24% | Excellent / Very Low Risk |
| Riskklass 4 | 0.25% - 0.74% | Good / Low Risk |
| Riskklass 3 | 0.75% - 3.04% | Satisfactory / Normal Risk |
| Riskklass 2 | 3.05% - 8.04% | Weak / High Risk |
| Riskklass 1 | ≥ 8.05% | Very Weak / Very High Risk |
What this means for us: to secure the lowest mortgage interest rates, you must aim to stay within Riskklass 4 or 5 (a risk forecast below 0.75%).
What Information Does UC Capture?
UC does not make subjective judgments. Its risk forecast is calculated using official records and historical statistics gathered from multiple authorities:
- Skatteverket Data: Your declared taxable income (fastställd förvärvsinkomst) for the last few years.
- Debt & Credit Registers: Your total outstanding unsecured loans, mortgages, and credit card limits, along with how much of those limits you use.
- Inquiry History: Every kreditupplysning registered on your profile. A high volume of inquiries within a short period signals financial distress to banks.
- Civil Status & Real Estate: Marital status, address changes, and whether you own real property.
What this means for us: every formal credit check remains visible on your report for exactly 12 months, after which it is deleted and no longer affects your risk forecast.
How Kronofogden Data Appears on Your Report
Unpaid debts that reach the Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) have a devastating impact on your UC profile:
- Non-Payment Record (Betalningsanmärkning): If Kronofogden issues a formal ruling, private credit reference agencies register an anmärkning. This remains on a private individual's record for 3 years (36 months), even if the debt is settled the next day.
- Active Debt Balance (Skuldsaldo): If you have an active, unpaid debt balance currently held by Kronofogden, it is updated daily in UC, driving your profile immediately into Riskklass 1.
- Historical Debt Balance (Historiskt skuldsaldo): If a debt remains unpaid at Kronofogden for more than 4 weeks, UC registers a historical note. Even after you pay it off and your active skuldsaldo becomes zero, this historical note remains visible to lenders for 24 months.
Kivra Alerts and Monitoring
Under Swedish law, whenever a company orders a credit check on you, the credit bureau must send you a copy of the report (omfrågekopia).
If you have a digital mailbox (digital brevlåda) like Kivra, you will receive an instant notification showing who requested the check and what data was shared.
What this means for us: monitoring these alerts helps you detect identity theft early. If you see a credit inquiry you did not authorize, you should lock your credit file immediately.
NordDaily Tips
Actionable Tip: Keep your credit card limits low. UC calculates your risk forecast based on your total credit limits, even if you do not spend any of it. Cancel unused credit cards and lower active limits to immediately improve your UC Risk Class.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a credit inquiry (kreditupplysning) affect my score?
Every formal credit check registered on your profile by UC remains visible to banks and other lenders for exactly 12 months. Having too many inquiries within a short period will lower your credit rating.
What is the difference between a betalningsanmärkning and a skuldsaldo?
A betalningsanmärkning is a non-payment record that remains on your file for 3 years. A skuldsaldo is an active, unpaid debt balance currently held by Kronofogden. Even after you pay off the skuldsaldo, a historical record of it remains visible in UC for 24 months.
How is the UC Risk Class calculated?
UC calculates a risk forecast (riskprognos) representing the probability of you experiencing payment defaults within the next 12 months. This percentage is mapped to a Risk Class from 1 (highest risk) to 5 (lowest risk).
Does checking my own credit score lower my rating?
No. Checking your own credit report through Min UC or monitoring tools does not register a formal inquiry and has absolutely zero impact on your risk rating.
